Kamikaze Extend their 100% Record

ESPZEN Sunday League Season 20 Division 6

Deportivo Lions vs Kamikaze FC

13/10/2013
1pm Kickoff
Temasek Secondary

Kamikaze looked to play the part of a team in serious form and they played the role to a pomp as they edged out their opponents Deportivo Lions 5-1 to cement their place at the top. It looked like it was going to be a tough game as KKZ started slowly with the Lions defending stoutly. However, when Shivaanan broke the deadlock with a well-taken follow-up shot after Safar had drilled the ball into the box, it was cue for the floodgates to open. Siva doubled the score after some excellent work from Pratheep who crossed in a ball, which Siva bravely pounced onto and turned into goal with a flick off his head.

The Lions tried to put up a fight when they clawed one back, but their lights were knocked out when Yeli took over and scored two goals within the space of 10 minutes to underline his class as the player to watch to lead the team into half-time 4-1 up.

The second half saw a much slower passage of play as KKZ were contend to stroke the ball around and get a feel of their passing routines while any threatening goal-bound attack was calmly thwarted by the defence and their new goalkeeper loan-signing Aravin from DBoyz. However, the half was brought alive, when a quick counter-attack saw Yeli released down the left flank. He found himself acres of space and just enough time to put in an exquisite cross, but even that was overshadowed by what followed next, as Gerard coolly awaited the oncoming of the ball, before unleashing a sweetly-timed volley that would rank up there as one of the finest goals scored in amateur football. 5-1 was how it ended.

In hindsight, KKZ should have won the match by an even bigger margin, but there were positives to be taken from the match as the team resembled a unit that is well-settled and ready to mount a serious challenge for the title. As it stands, after just 4 games played, the team has collected a maximum of 12 points, leading its closest competitor by 3 points, has scored the highest number of goals so far, (16), and conceded the least, (6), to have the best goal difference at this point, (+10).

This is a season that is beginning to promise much. Will it end as a glorious season, or will Kamikaze be led down by their trademark curse of complacency. Watch this space...
