Kamikaze March towards the Title

ESPZEN Sunday League Season 20 Division 6

Kamikaze FC vs Andernese FC

8/12/2013
11am Kickoff
Centaurs Turf City

In the previous week, the Gaffer had laid down the 100 goal target for the team, but in all reality this game was still an important one as they were playing against their closest title contenders and a win for Andernese could seriously complicate the title race. However, the ease with which Kamikaze got the job done made a mockery of the title race as they ran out comfortable 6-1 winners despite having an under-strength squad.

Hevy opened the scoring with yet another typically taken goal, leaving the defenders for dead as he turned and swivelled past them before unleashing a deadly shot. However, a horrendous backpass led to the Keeper Thombu needing to make a last-ditch tackle. However, the referee ruled it a foul and Andernese equalised from the resulting penalty. A few eyebrows were raised at the manner at which KKZ found themselves pegged back.Victor, however, who had earlier put in a shift as keeper while waiting for Aravin Thombu to arrive, decided to take matters in his own hands, as he put in arguably his best performance of the season. He kept applying pressure on the opponent centrebacks with intelligent runs and was first to latch on to a lofted ball from Faizal. He then nudged away the defender before laying off to Mohaan who made no mistake of the chance. 2-1 was how it headed into the half.

Kamikaze looked to end the contest early on in the second half and they did just that, as Victor flicked a header onto the path of Dinesh Manjan who finished exquisitely to give KKZ a clear lead. The duo of Faizal and Safar then took over to end the contest as they combined in an amazing play which saw Faizal playing the ball onto Safar who made no mistake in scoring. Spaceship then took over the duties, as he assisted Safar's second, by playing the ball through the middle that set up Safar for a 1-on-1. Hevy then grabbed his second consecutive brace with a neat finish that gave the keeper no chance.

The champagnes have been put into the ice-box and the fireworks on standby to celebrate what would be a resounding title win. But the team is not getting carried away as they are firmly focused on achieving the target set by their gaffer. As it stands, the team needs to score 32 goals in 5 games at an average of slightly over 7 a game. The task is made easier with the knowledge that their remaining games are all against teams with the worst defence in the league. But will the KKZ boys step up to the challenge? Watch this space!!!
